VR League Season 3 Week 5 Recap

VR League Season 3 Week 5 Recap

VR League Season 3 continues the push toward grand finals that will be held June 8-9 in Leicester, UK. Week 5 concluded on Sunday and next weekend will mark the end of stage 2 for Echo Arena, Echo Combat, and Onward.

Space Junkies continues group phase this week. Players in all the games are eager to see which teams will secure spots in the playoffs and then grand finals.

ONWARD

Several teams in Europe and North America chose not to participate this week due to the fact that the competition took place on Easter Sunday. The next weekly cup marks the end of stage 2 so we expect to see participation numbers rise again as teams try to secure enough points for a spot in the Online Closed Qualifiers in May.

There were only six teams signed in to compete in the European region this week, but this meant no default wins during the four rounds of Swiss cup competition.

Beginners once again secured the number one position. The top EU team seems determined to secure one of the two spots at the Online Closed Qualifier up for grabs in stage 2. It was anticipated that they would’ve had this during stage 1, but in fact BossFight earned the most points and secured that spot. Unless there are some major upsets next weekend, it looks like Beginners and Article Thirteen might be on their way to the Online Closed Qualifiers for EU.

Meanwhile, BossFight had an unfortunate loss to Vikings this week that bumped them down to fourth place in overall standings at the end of the day.

In the North American region, Legionnaires made a huge comeback this week as they went through the first four rounds and defeated some of the top teams in the league:  G-Men, Animal House, Phoenix, and SMC Tactical. In the fifth and final Swiss round, Mob Squad finally took them down 3-2 in a best of five. It will be interesting to see how well the Legionnaires do when all the teams are back next week, but if they keep up teamwork like this, we might see them again in the Online Closed Qualifiers.

Mob Squad, Legionnaires, and Danglers all ended the day with one loss apiece, but Legionnaires secured the top position and the biggest portion of the weekly cup prize money as they came in first place overall based on the Buchholz tiebreaker system.

Below are the point standings after the second week of stage 2.

You can see all results for this week's Onward VRL competitions on the ESL Play website.

ECHO COMBAT

In the European region, Blerst! was able to claim the number one position this week, defeating Team Gravity with some very well-coordinated teamwork that just shut down the number one Echo Combat team.

Team Gravity secured their spot in the Online Closed Qualifiers during stage 1 and unless there’s a major upset next week, Blerst! and Floaters Unite will secure those two spots for stage 2.

In North America, VRespawn once again finished with a perfect record, but Kangorillaz was close on their heels.

Some of the best combat of the day in North America was between Ignite and Alpha Derezz. These teams have been very closely matched during season 3 and each week it’s entertaining to spectate their matches and see who comes out on top.

This week, Alpha Derezz was victorious on the first map – Fission, a payload map – then Ignite took the second map – Dyson, a capture the point map. This put the teams into the third map – Combustion. This is also a capture point map and while Alpha Derezz seemed to group up as a team, push at the right times, and play well, they were ultimately defeated by Ignite.

ECHO ARENA

Ready At Dawn’s other zero-gravity game is Echo Arena. While Echo Combat is a first-person shooter, Echo Arena is a sport game where teams of three fly through a virtual arena and try to score on the opponent team’s goal.

Teams in Europe had a bit of switching up this week that seemed to work in favor of EggBoyz, formerly known as Team Brainded. Earlier in the season this team consisted of Ravel, inFinity, and LoneGecko, but as of last week LoneGecko has been joined by Matti_123 and Nillewick. This team claimed first place in weekly cup 5, defeating even the number one EU Echo Arena team – Team Gravity.

During weekly cup four, Kangorillaz lost the number one weekly rank to Eleven Point Five, but they reclaimed that this week with a perfect 5-0 record. They’ve already secured their spot for the Online Closed Qualifier and unless there’s an upset next week. Eleven Point Five will take one of the two positions up for grabs during stage 2. Several teams are in a battle for points to secure the other spot from stage 2 and then we’ll see any unqualified teams again during the Last Chance Qualifier on May 5, when one more team from each region will advance to the closed qualifiers.

SPACE JUNKIES

Teams continued the group phase this week in Ubisoft’s Space Junkies. Several teams secured a spot in the playoffs as they continued to dominate their group competitions.

In Europe, The Leftovers and Team Flux took wins for the second week in a row in group A. Team Gravity (in group B) and Spationaute095 (in group D) also had perfect scores, which should advance them to playoffs. It remains to be seen which other teams will advance to the EU playoffs.

North America only has three groups from which eight teams need to advance. Two teams will advance from each of those groups and ESL admins announced that there will be an NA last chance qualifier for the final two NA spots in playoffs. The date for that will be announced on the Space Junkies page.

Meanwhile, teams that secured spots in playoffs with their second week of winning matches were Hydration and DanglersSJ (both from group A), Special Business (in group B), and SaS (in group C). Next week will be the final week of group phase and we’ll find out who is advancing to the playoffs for Space Junkies during their first season in the VR League!
